Dog show shows Portsmouth care home residents a woofing good time

A Fareham, Portsmouth care home had plenty to smile about when a group of dogs visited in a four-legged frenzy.

The local community came together to support and enjoy the first dog show held at Fernes Care Home, the 52-bedroom centre specialising in dementia care.

Guests and residents were treated to a raffle, tombola and impressive dog tricks, as well as watching the furry animals take on an agility assault course.

Kat Claridge, activities co-ordinator for Fernes Care Home, said: “It’s been a really fun day with everyone having a great time. There’s been lots for people to do and the residents have loved it.

“We wanted to make it a fun day for them and give them something to look forward to. Hopefully we will have another one next year and we’ll also be having a Christmas event too which should see a good turnout again with most of the people here today saying there will be here for that too.”

The dogs were treated to homemade nibble from Corrina Pup Cakes and the owner, Corrina Parker, said it had been a nice say for every and residents loved having the dogs there too.

The money raised on the day will go towards the care home and the RSPCA.

Maria Fuccio brought her two eight-week-old teacup Yorkshire Terriers and two long-hair Chihuahuas and said: “To see the residents respond and interact like they do with dogs is priceless. It’s also very good training for the dogs as it teaches them how to socialise.”
