‘Alternative’ Poole care home receives ‘outstanding’

A nursing home in Poole has become part of the 2% of adult social care service rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection earlier this year.

Burwood Nursing Home provides care for up to 58 people has their design innovations praised as they boast floor length windows allowing residents to see the home’s grounds from anywhere. The home also boasts a traditional pub and art deco theatre open to the local community.

The CQC report said: “People were treated with kindness, compassion and respect. Their independence was promoted as far as possible, whilst respecting their choices. There was an emphasis on people having choices and their preferences being respected.”

The report emphasised how residents and their families were included in recruitment and had influence on who got the job. CQC praised the wide range of activities offered to residents and the service’s strong links to community organisations.

Paul Jessop, Burwood Nursing Home owner, said to Care Home Professional: “There have been many new homes opening in recent years in the local area but these are generally the large corporate provider who provide somewhat institutional care without the personal and individual touch that the smaller family run home can offer.”
