Residents from a Godalming, Surrey, care home get to hang out daily with goats, pigs and chickens following their requests to have an on-site farm.
It is believed the farm at Broadwater Lodge is the first of its kind and presents several benefits.
The farm and animal care give residents a sense of purpose and provides many therapeutic benefits for dementia patients.
The farm is home to two pigs, Art and Arnie, two goats, Shakespeare and Parsley, Rolo the rabbit, two guinea pigs and chickens.
The Care UK home has opened it doors for the local community to visit the farm, proving to be a huge success – and gives residents the opportunity to socialise with their neighbours.
Angela Bookham, Broadwater Lodge manager, said: “It’s a joy to see the residents and team take pride in caring for our farm.
“We are always looking to plan exciting activities for residents and as so many have enjoyed previous animal visits, we wanted to find a way to make animals a permanent fixture at the care home.”
The care home also has its own cinema and hairdressers designed to enable residents to live enjoyable lives.
Broadwater Lodge was rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in 2016.
