Lancashire primary school children spark up friendships with elderly

A primary school in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire has formed a friendship with a new care centre and aim to delight residents with regular visits.

The children of Heyhouses Church of England Primary School will be visiting The Hamptons care centre up to three times a month to participate in an afternoon of activities and interaction with residents.

Each visit will host a different theme with the aim of encouraging residents and children to work together on stimulating activities that involves team working, taking turns and communication.

The visits are part of the personal, social and health education portion of Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum of building children’s understanding of the world around them.

The benefits for the residents is the ongoing connections with young people in society, confidence building and interaction with others – as well as encouraging independence.

Sara Richardson, Pastoral care manager, said: “It’s great to be involved with the local community and we’re delighted to be making regular visits to our new friends at The Hamptons.

“With visits such as these we have the opportunity to help children gain a better understanding of the world around them and gain confidence and awareness about the needs of others.

“It’s such a positive experience for all involved.”

Visits will last for approximately an hour and aim to provide interaction, engagement, laughter, conversation and entertainment for the residents and children.

Lorraine Disley, Hamptons home manager, said: “Our residents enjoyed their first meeting with the children from the primary school and we’re really looking forward to our regular visits.

“Bringing children and the elderly together has so many benefits, these will be wonderful afternoons for all involved.”
