‘Inadequate’ Chelmsford care home set to close after concerns raised about residents’ welfare

A Chelmsford care home that was previously rated ‘inadequate’ by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors is set to close.

The home, Guide at Broomfield, was formally known as Chelmer Valley Nursing Home and has informed its residents they will be closing due to financial difficulties.

The CQC raised concerns in May following an inspection about the safety and welfare of residents.

Inspectors noted multiple breaches of the Health and Social Care Act, and families were asked to attend an emergency meeting to ‘discuss the future of the care home’ last week.

Relatives were reportedly informed they would need to find new homes for their loved ones.

One family member said: “It all felt very choreographed. The person speaking just stood up and tried to blame the CQC report for why they are shutting down.

“They are using the excuse the home is no longer financially viable because the contract with Broomfield Hospital has not been renewed.”

Essex County Council has said they would help families with any support needed.
