Independent Age, the older people’s charity, has examined funding options for social care in its new research.

The charity is now calling for personal care to be free for all those who need it in England for individuals aged 65 and over, in a bid to solve the social care crisis.

A poll suggested most adults in England would support paying an increased tax or a lump sum to fund free personal care.

Free personal care would mean providing support a person receives everyday at no cost such as getting in and out of bed, getting dressed and shopping.

The report said free personal care would simplify the system, which is make it easier for people to know exactly how much they’d need to pay while receiving care.

The poll, carried out by YouGov, asked more than 2000 English working-age adults with almost 75% of adults in England support the idea – two-thirds of adult in England also agreed they would be willing to pay more tax to provide free personal care, either through an increase in Income Tax, National Insurance or paying a lump sum on retirement.

The social care green paper is due in October, but has hinted at a delay by Caroline Dinenage.
